1992-93 Club Pro Set

Background:  This blog is long in coming but was conceived not so long ago.  As an avid Pro Set collector who has the "sickness" especially strong within, I decided to collect everything Pro Set ever printed!  Yes, I am THAT guy! With the help of a little OCD and a lot of time to spare, I am close to verifying all the set names and variations that were printed.  Yes! As with all Pro Set press runs, there are variations!

 

Description:  These sets were made to be used as a positive reinforcement tool for school children during the 1992-1993 school year.  Obviously, they were also meant to attract new collectors, but that topic is out of the scope of this blog.  Depending on the child’s reading level, corresponding card sets with Gold, Silver, or Bronze designations on the back were made available for them as prizes for a job well done.  These parallel card sets have the same pictures on the front* (see 1993 Club Pro Set page), but the questions on the back vary in their degree of difficulty.  Bronze are the “easiest” or lowest reading level and Gold are the “hardest” or highest reading level.  Silver falls somewhere in the middle.  They were also available for purchase at stores for $1 a pack.

Furthermore:  None of these sets were created for high school students.  The common misconception is that bronze was made for the elementary level, silver for the junior high school level and gold for the high school.  This is wrong.  The corresponding grade levels were :

• Bronze:  Kindergarten through 2nd grade - Elementary
• Silver:  3rd Grade through 5th grade - Elementary
• Gold:  6th grade through 8th grade - Junior High*

*Remember that during the early ninetys, Junior High School ended in 8th grade and High School began in 9th grade.  It has been changed in my area.  Now, 8th grade is part of the high school level.  Also, Junior High is now called "Middle School."

Process:   This blog is geared towards informing the reader about why the sets were made, how they were distributed, what sponsors were involved, etc.  At one point, I was convinced that it would take 3,213 cards to complete this set!  I am not so convinced now, but it is turning out to be larger than what most collectors had imagined.

 

Additional Information:  This blog will also contain information about the 1992 Smithsonian Institution cards and the 1993 Boomerang Book Club cards.  Both were printed by Pro Set during the same time frame and both have the same Gold, Silver, and Bronze designations on the back. Therefore, they are part of the Master Set.
