1992 Club Pro Set Promos

1992 Club Pro Set Promo's
Updated On: January 24, 2015

Description:  The Club Pro Set concept was geared towards instructing students in elementary and middle school.  But a conundrum must have quickly arose.  How can information on a card be disseminated properly to children of varying reading levels?  Club Pro Set solved this by creating parallel sets with gold, silver, and bronze designations.  Gold would be the highest level and bronze the lowest.  Silver would fall in the middle, and is probably why it was chosen to represent the concept.  Full-bleed photos were used on the fronts along with large logos, just like the prototypes. But the bars were colorized.  The backs now had smaller logos, the level designations and no color photos.  Instead, the trapezium was enlarged and filled with text.  Three sets are confirmed to exist.

To-Do:  Post scans of the packs.

Additional Information:  These sets were first noticed by a fellow collector.  He termed them "Fancy Backs" to describe the back border texture.  I initially dismissed them because, as a Pro Set Master Collector, I had seen many instances of light and dark printings of the same cards throughout their product lines.  So I jumped to the conclusion that these were printed when the printer had plenty of ink!  I have now paid closer attention to the cards.  They have a different copyright from the base set, "1992 Pro Set Inc.," and the copyright is printed in yellow letters!

Base cards on top, Promo card on bottom

Notice that the logos are different sizes.  The promo cards' logo is slightly smaller!

Furthermore:  I believe that more promos exist, but have yet to be documented.  The trends exhibited in the 1992 Club Pro Set Master List suggests there could be as many as 7.  These would include:
  • Cat Nips 1-9
  • Creepy Creatures 1-9
  • Daring Dogs 1-9
  • Horse Power 1-9
The above are all numbered 1-9, have supplementary sets (10-18, 19-27, etc.), and have yellow and orange back color variations (see 1992 Club Pro Set).  These traits are shared with the 3 known promo sets.  But, alas, there is no way to know for sure.

The pictures are zoomed and rhinoceros is a Reverse Negative on the base (bottom) card!  Also, the logos are smaller!

Notes:  For readers of my previous revisions, I have concluded that 'Fancy Backs' are, in fact, promo cards.  Their logo sizes on front are the same size as the prototypes.  Also, some of the pictures are different (zoomed out).  This is a theory.  I cannot prove it at the moment.  But after collecting all Pro Set products, and knowing how the company loved to print promos, it makes sense.  If you have any further information about these promos, please post or email me at 1990proset at Gmail dot com.
